Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to stay there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
